This cultural tour takes us to one of the most historical cities in Albania. During this trip, we will make a stop in Belsh, a beautiful rural area with about 80 small lakes with karstic nature. Berat, is a UNESCO-protected town, with a history of 2500 years. It is divided into three large neighborhoods; Mangalem and Gorica which are split by Osum River, and the medieval castle, Kala, that is still inhabited on the Mangalem side. Visiting 'Kala' involves a steep walk up a cobble stone path but those who make it to the top will be rewarded with an amazing view of the whole valley.
We will visit the Museum of Iconography 'Onufri' which bears the name of a renowned fresco and icon-painter Onufri, This museum is located within the cathedral of St. Mary's Assumption. We will also visit the Red Mosque recognized by its lonely minaret and St.Trinity Church. After the fortress we usually stop by the Mangalemi quarter and the National Ethnographic Museum that is located in one of the most characteristic architectures, once the home of a wealthy Berat trader. This building holds a rich assemblage of traditional objects (more than 1000) and it represents very well Berat's long history and culture (Unfortunately, for the month of May 2023, this museum is undergoing reconstruction).
Across Osumi river lies the neighborhood of Gorica which directly faces Mangalem. The arched bridge of Gorica, built in 1780, is another architectural monument constructed to link these two main neighborhoods of Berat.
What to Bring: Comfortable walking shoes for cobblestone roads. Due to uneven surfaces, this tour is not recommended for people with walking disabilities. Please be prepared for all weather possibilities.
