Durres City : A guided walk around the ancient port on the Adriatic, exploring the history of this city through the last 2000 years. We start at the Castle, learning about Emperor Justinian and the strongest fortification in the Balkans in antiquity, as well as the invasion of Albania by the Italians at the start of World War II, and the deadly earthquake of 2019. Then we visit the Roman Amphitheater and Forum to discuss the history of this provincial capital which was built at the start of the Via Egnatia, one of the Empire’s most important trade routes. Afterward, we will walk up the hill to see the residence of King Zogu, built in the early 20th Century for the last king of Albania, and head out on a dramatic overlook with views of the city, Amphitheater, and the Adriatic Sea far below. To finish, we head back to the seashore for a stroll and some lunch before heading back to Tirana. Lunch is at your own expense.
